Annotations
Informative annotations in ancient Chinese can be found on the map. Some toponyms and descriptions of geographical features are presented in various geographical regions, e.g., oceans, continents, countries, etc. As mentioned, most creatures on the map are also displayed with annotations.
Besides, six elliptical text boxes around the two hemispheres explain some natural phenomena, e.g., tidal movement, the composition of clouds, the movement of air, and the formation of mountains. For instance:
Air 氣行
“……夫氣厚分有上中下三域,上域近火,近火常熱; 下域近水土,水土常為太陽所射,足以發暖 ,故氣亦暖; 中域上遠於天,下遠於地,則寒。……”
Air can be divided into three parts according to its height position. The upper area is near the sun, which is often hot; the middle area is cold because it is far from the sky and the ground; the lower area is warm because it is close to the water and the earth which is always irradiated by the sun.
